Alex Seaver represents a strikingly new phenomenon in today’s music world. Whether releasing studio albums for his own artist outfit Mako, working with the leading video game League of Legends and their accompanying TV series Arcane, or writing and producing for some of today’s biggest artists in the pop industry, Seaver’s uniquely rare range of influences lends to a significant impact not often seen across combined worlds of music, film, and television. The Juilliard-trained musician turned EDM artist, songwriter, film composer, and Executive Music Producer charts truly wild terrain.
The first season of Arcane was the number one streaming show on Netflix for three consecutive weeks and earned Seaver his first Emmy nomination. The diverse soundtrack featured an array of extraordinary work, from rock icon Sting singing on “What Could Have Been”, French artist Woodkid on the arching “Guns for Hire”, Pusha T’s feature on the twitching and shimmering “Misfit Toys”, and Bea Miller’s performance of “Playground”, which itself has over 100 million streams on Spotify alone. “Everything was handcrafted, bespoke, and carefully threaded together,” Seaver says.
For the second season of Arcane, his expanded role as Executive Producer of the soundtrack album saw him working with some of the largest international stars on the planet. Whether it was writing and producing songs from scratch, or guiding legendary artists through the musical world of Arcane, Seaver’s impact on the creation of the 22 song soundtrack album and musical score is unparalleled. The resulting album features songs from global artists such as Twenty One Pilots, Linkin Park, Young Miko, Stray Kids as well as revered artists like Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary,) Royal the Serpent, Freja Riding and Raja Kumari. His most personal touch on the album, “What Have They Done To Us,” is penned and sung under his artist moniker, Mako. Since its release, the soundtrack album has garnered over 1 billion on-demand streams, with the Extended Edition featuring even more global superstars, including Coldplay, Sasha Alex Sloan, and JVKE. Rolling Stone praises the album saying, “[The Season 2 soundtrack] pushes the boundaries of what a video game adaptation can achieve musically.”
Seaver started recording and performing as Mako in 2011. His stature grew with each successive release, and included work with leading DJs; Avicii, Alan Walker, Steve Angello, R3HAB, and Illenium, as well as having his own number one dance radio records. Seaver released his second full studio album Fable in 2019. The critically acclaimed and much-streamed album featured songs like “Breathe” and “Coyote” that travel in enthralling concentric circles somewhere between Radiohead and IDM mystery.
Never content to stay on one path, Seaver started writing and producing singles for Riot Games’ Esports and promotional events, most specifically for League of Legends. “Legends Never Die” represents his most successful foray into this space, and has gone on to be Platinum-certified in the US, while “Rise” (which he performed at Riot’s Worlds event in South Korea in 2018) has gone on to be Gold-certified. Expanding again to Arcane allowed Seaver to utilize more of his growing toolkit.
As he looks ahead, Seaver remains driven by a passion to create immersive, ambitious worlds through music. “I just want to keep doing things that continue to be in-depth and ambitious, and dive deep into storytelling and characters, whether that’s producing, writing, singing, or executive producing. After the last 10 years, I feel that I am getting closer to discovering the way to make those abilities click into place to best serve the projects on which I am lucky enough to work.”
