From 1974 to 1977, he served as the musical director for Marvin Gaye, followed by leading the trumpet section for the Count Basie Orchestra from 1977 to 1979. Nolan’s illustrious career includes collaborations with iconic artists such as Natalie Cole (1979-1981), Stevie Wonder (1981-1983), Diana Ross (1983-1985), Phil Collins (1985), and Anita Baker (1986). He has also performed and toured with esteemed groups like the Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton Orchestras. Since 1974, Nolan has been a top studio musician in Los Angeles and continues to be in high demand within the jazz scene. He currently owns a recording studio and actively produces music.
